What Stratum is
Stratum is a private cloud for your own hardware. One ISO installs the operating
system and the platform; the result is a multi-tenant cloud with virtual
machines, private networks, block storage, load balancers, DNS and backups,
shared out through organizations, projects and IAM policies. It is driven from a
web console, a REST API, the stratumctl CLI and a Terraform provider. The
install needs no internet access: the ISO carries the whole release.
Install shapes
Section titled “Install shapes”| Shape | Status |
|---|---|
| Single node: one machine runs everything | Supported by the installer today. |
| Hyperconverged cluster: three or more nodes, each running the control plane, workloads and storage | Supported by the installer: one node founds the cluster and the others join it. |
| Disaggregated: control plane and compute on separate machines | In design. |
Choose a path
Section titled “Choose a path”| Single node | Hyperconverged cluster | |
|---|---|---|
| Machines | One | Three or more, from the same ISO |
| Survives a machine failing | No | Yes: the control plane, database and secrets store are replicated, and instances on cluster storage restart on another node |
| Block storage | LVM-thin pools on the node’s disks | Ceph, replicated across the nodes, and LVM-thin pools |
| Object storage, managed databases, Kubernetes, Auto Scaling | Not offered | Offered |
| Start | Install a single node | Install a cluster |
Both paths use the same ISO, requirements, firmware settings and administration. Pick the path before writing the USB stick; the first screen of the installer asks which one this machine is.
What a single node runs
Section titled “What a single node runs”Compute (instances, instance types, images), networking (VPCs, subnets, security groups, floating IPs, DNS), block storage on LVM-thin pools, load balancers, backup plans, Secrets Manager, Client VPN and security posture.
Object storage, managed databases, Kubernetes and Auto Scaling need a cluster and are not offered on a single node.
Where to go next
Section titled “Where to go next”- Check the requirements. A cluster adds its own.
- Download and verify the ISO.
- Write a USB stick and set the firmware.
- Install a single node or install a cluster.
