How the install works

A Stratum install has two stages. Neither needs internet access.

Stage Runs on Does
1. Console installer The live system on the USB stick Partitions the OS disk (or mirrors two), installs the base OS, and sets the management NIC, hostname and root access. Copies the release onto the disk.
2. Install service The installed node, on its first boot Takes the cloud’s configuration (storage, network, DNS, time, services, admin), validates it against the machine, installs the platform and waits for it to be ready. Then it switches itself off.

Stage 1 is answered on the machine’s screen or serial console. Stage 2 is answered over the network, from another machine, in one of two ways:

Method Best for
Web installer A first install: a guided form in the browser at https://<node>:9443/.
CLI and node.yaml Repeatable installs: stratum-installer from a shell, with the configuration as a file.

Both write the same /etc/stratum/node.yaml and run the same install, and the draft lives on the node: answers saved in the browser show in the CLI, and the other way round.

An unattended install takes both stages from files on a USB stick and needs no input except removing the install medium.

  • The machine meets the requirements and the firmware settings are done.
  • A free floating IP range on the LAN is chosen (a /24 is typical).
  • A workstation on the management network has a browser, or the CLI.
